Information superiority plays an important role in making decisions regarding the scope and design of security programs, the allocation of resources and the deployment of assets. With the aid of developing technology, many systems have been allocated to decision makers’ use. Besides the developed sensors, systems and applications, public information located on the World Wide Web (WWW) carries some potential for Maritime Information and Knowledge Management (MIKM) activities. >From this starting point, the SeaSpider project combines several research fields to gather information automatically from the Web. The mission of the project is to provide comprehensive assistance to Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) operators by enabling automated gathering of supplementary information about vessel movements (past locations, arrival & departure times etc.). SeaSpider is fine-tuned to report on information specific to the arrival and departure of marine vessels at ports.
